A Better Approach should be Employed to Improve the Standard of Journalism in Ghana - Flagbearer Hopeful for DSP

Flagbearer hopeful for the Democratic Socialist Party, Mr. Osman Abubakari-Sadiq, has said there should be better ways to improve the standard of journalism in Ghana. He said this on the DSP twitter spaces on twitter on Friday, 3rd April, 2022. In his commentary on the state of the country's security, Osman suggested that the recent attacks on journalists by the security services are condemnable.

In his submission, he said, journalists should up their game and avoid reckless journalism practice that does not impact the lives of the people positively. In response to a question from the show's host, Patricia Naa Aku Shika Addo, about how journalists can improve their profession, Osman stated, "The recklessness with which Ghanaian journalists operate is alarming. Nonetheless, the approach taken by security services, particularly the police, to attack and intimidate journalists is not the way forward. The media conglomerates should employ journalists who have a background in the field and value journalism's principles. Journalists should receive rigorous training, and the regulatory framework that they use as a guideline in their line of work should be enforced."

He also stated that the GJA should work with the appropriate authorities to have all members of their organization accredited. Thereby, establishing a standard for professional journalism in the country. As a result, the members will gain credibility, and the public will regard them as the go-to people for accurate information.

The theme of the day was "State of the Nation Address: The Breakdown." Edem Vine Tutu (SRC President–Ghana Institute of Journalism-GIJ), Dominic Asitanga (GIJ Lecturer), and Theorose Elikplim Dzineku (Lecturer at GIJ) are among the distinguished guests in attendance.
